One.
I am not a wolf.
And yet I can see in their eyes that, despite the coloration of my fur and the flesh of my mouth, despite my horns, I am a wolf. To them, I am a wolf, something simple that they can understand, yet oddly colored and off-tone in manner. It would not matter if I told them what I really am. I doubt they would believe me.
If I told them that I could change shapes and work spells, I would still be a wolf, just one with connections.
It does not matter. They will believe as they like; it is easier that way.
Please consider that these words are not meant to be malicious. I do not readily have feelings of the sort. Or any sort, for that matter. And if I told you why, it is unlikely you would believe me. I suppose I have nothing to lose by telling you.
I am a remnant. A part of being gained consciousness, but left behind when the main resident exited the body. I am unsure what happened to that other being. I feel... hollow. I only know that I am what is left and find it hard to define the feeling. Something is missing; the body knows this. It aches for that other part. The scar across my chest often itches, as if in reaction to something... old instincts, perhaps? A lost memory of the incident? I cannot be sure.
The sensation of insecurity is an unsettling one.
In less than a year after my arrival in the Realms -- 3 of which are without names, I am given to understand and are simply numbered -- I found another stone. Their original purpose, I neither know or understand, but they have the peculiar quality of facilitating communication between the owner and some sort of entity. Spirit? Something else...? I am unsure.
In appearance, the stones are more or less round in shape, like an oval made into a disk, but not flat. They have a series of markings, which seem oddly familiar, although I cannot place them, and three holes. Two on either side, towards the top, and one on the bottom, in the middle. Some have pictographs or hieroglyphs, which seem to carry a specific meaning.
The stone I found was one with the former characteristics, common insofar as I am aware, although still rare as a whole.
Due to an unfortunate series of events involving a dragon (she really was rather pretty, odd though she be to my eyes) and a keen misunderstanding on her part, the stone was lost. Rather, the magic contained inside -- this is what allows you to communicate with the entity -- was spent in a rare show of magical talent. When I lifted the veil from the stone... well, it had stopped glowing.
It was no longer useful to me, so I was forced to leave it behind.
