Death and Despair are Hell-hounds, and/or Death-Dealers. Their duties are to guard Hades, along with the gates of Tartarus from those who might attempt to enter or leave without the Gods' permission. Their second charge is that of a death-dealer. He is quite literally death itself when called to perform such duties. Their second duty is not something they enjoy, but through their infinitely long lives, they know the necessity.
Despair:
His physical form is that of a black wolf, just like his older brother, Death. The differences are, if you can get close enough: the marking on his left shoulder, his pelt's temperature (which I assure you, is very cold, though he can control it), his size (slightly larger than your average grey wolf) and his ear's shape. He has no need to hear, he can feel every bit of moisture in his direct vicinity. He will know you're coming. (His preset is a 90% completed transformation. The ice shifting into black fur, the mark is the last to change.)
Death:
His physical form is identical to Despair, except that his mark is on the right shoulder instead of the left. (His preset is a mid-way point in his transformation, exposing his skull as it burns into fur, and his heart burning brightly enough to show his mortal-appearing skeleton).
The two of them are unique, as Death controls fire, offers a quick death; as Despair controls ice, and offers a slow and painful one instead. You will may not meet Death, though you will know Despair [insert evil laugh.. jk].
They are the second-generation of hell-hound, and the only two of their kind. All resulting hell-hounds are derivative of their nature, though none are as potent or powerful as the two brothers, and in turn, they are not as powerful as their father. Kerberos (Known as Cerberus to most mortals). The three headed behemoth that has control of the three ruling aspects in the name of Tartarus and Hades himself. Life. Death, and Spirit.
e.e I hope that gives you the idea of the brothers & their lineage, and what makes them unique to themselves.
