GENERAL
Dracolupine are hybrid creatures - half western dragon, half dire wolf. (Plural: Dracolupine. Singular: Dracolupis.) Their species name comes from this essential aspect. Draco, the Latin term for Dragon; and Lupus, the Latin term for Wolf. (Pronounced as seen fit.) The first dracolupis was born in a far away land called KwasiLand - a valley divided by a great river. The cause of this cross between species was a result of dragons and direwolves living very close together in a singular land. At the time, the birth of these creatures were forbidden by the king of KwasiLand. Any dragon+wolf associations were looked down upon majorly by the law, but as war raged on, democracy won out and dragons and wolves were allowed to live and love beside each other freely at last. As a result from this compromise, dracolupine now roam the world freely and are an official species.
CHARACTERISTICS
Dracolupine are quite peculiar in appearance. They usually have a “mane” or frill starting from the pole or the forehead and trailing down to the beginning of the tailbone. The most significant feature on a dracolupis is quite likely the massive dragon wings. Their tails are not especially fluffy or wolf-like, but more long and slender like a dragon’s, except with fur. Sometimes, they can grow to develop prominent horns on their heads as well as draconic claws and fangs. Some dracolupine have been known to sprout defined spines along their backs and necks, also much like dragons. Rarely, if ever, a dracolupine will be covered in scales instead of thick, wolf-like fur.
Their howls/roars are a solid cross between the two: a loud, blood curdling shrill that drones on like a wolf’s howl.
They are also quite large, growing anywhere between the size of a bear and a school bus. Females and males have no real size difference. It really just depends on the birthers of the individual.
Dracolupine are also prone to develop magical powers such as breathing fire, controlling weather, summoning dark forces, and just about anything else you can think of. The direwolves of KwasiLand were quite skilled in the magical arts, and dragons are famous for also having this same trait. Very rarely, a dracolupine is born with absolutely no powers.
COLORS AND MARKINGS
Dracolupine are as colorful and varied in appearance as their dragon/wolf parents. Dragons tend to be very extravagant in appearance as well as very plain. Direwolves are more prone to be less colorful. Dracolupine have been known to be rainbow colored, checkered, striped, black and white, natural browns and greens, bright blue, and just about anything else the mind can come up with.
MALES
Males are usually very large, stocky, bulky, and masculine. Besides their reproductive organs, there is no real reoccurring pattern with the way males differ from females. Some males tend to be on the slimmer side, even.
FEMALES
Females are less stocky but large and bulky nonetheless. They’re more prone to appear more feminine than males, but have no defined features besides their reproductive organs.
LIFESPAN
Dragons in KwasiLand were known to live up to a thousand years while the direwolves were known to live lifespans similar to modern-day, Earth humans. As a result, dracolupines can live to be about 500 years old.
They grow fast and have fairly brief childhoods but remain in their prime for many, many years before entering their elder years.
Infantry lasts about ten years. Childhood and adolescence lasts about fifteen years. Teen years last about thirty or so years. By the time they hit sixty years of age, a dracolupis has reached the human equivalent of “18 years old.” Young adulthood lasts from age 60 to age 250. A fully grown adult can be anywhere between 250 and 400 years old. From 400 to 500 years, a dracolupis is considered elderly. Very, very few dracolupine have been known to live past this number.
BREEDING
Some may be curious as to how a dracolupis is born. The answer to this question lies with the mother of the individual. If the mother of the dracolupis was a wolf, most likely, the dracolupis was born alive - essentially, a mammal. If the mother of the individual was a dragon, she likely laid an egg and hatched her hybrid child after an amount of time of incubating the egg.
A female dracolupis is receptive to pretty much any donor, but regardless of her fertilizer’s species, she will birth her child in the same way she was born - through an egg or live. This can also determine if the dracolupis is more wolf-like or dragon-like in functionality and appearance. Ultimately, it is a toss-up between reptilian functionality and mammal functionality.
A dracolupis male is able to fertilize any female that is openly receptive to his species genes.
A dracolupis female is receptive to any fertile male of any species.
A dracolupis reaches sexual maturity at about 35 years of age.
Dracolupine have no specific breeding season, much like humans.
Dracolupine can be either monogamous or non - again, much like humans.
There is no defined mating ritual among dracolupine. Mates are decided by independent choice - AGAIN, much like humans.
A female’s gestation period lasts about a year, regardless if she lays eggs or gives birth to live young. If she in fact lays eggs, the egg(s) will hatch in 6 months once laid.
A female dracolupis can have/lay anywhere between 1 to 4 children/eggs in a litter/clutch. In rare cases, she can have/lay even more.
DIET
Since dragons and wolves are mainly carnivores, dracolupine are also carnivores. However, there is the occasional case that a dragon is a herbivore or omnivore. In this instance, the child is likely to be born omnivorous. Very rarely will a child turn out to be completely herbivorous.
